grain oriented electrical Steel: Characteristics and Applications

CRGO STEEL characteristics
As premium transformer core material, grain oriented steel core (CRGO) contains approximately 3% silicon with a strong Goss texture {110}<001>. Its specialized grain structure aligns grains precisely along the rolling direction, delivering outstanding directional magnetization and electromagnetic performance.
Designed exclusively for CRGO Electrical Steel for Transformer Applications, our crgo steel for transformer core supports high-efficiency transformer manufacturing. With low loss, high magnetic induction, flat uniform surface, tight thickness tolerance, strong coating adhesion and high interlayer resistance, this low loss electrical steel transformer material ensures stable, efficient and durable transformer operation.
Grain Oriented silicon steel, due to its typical electromagnetic properties, is widely used in the following products:
- Large power transformes
- Smail and medium-sized power transormer
- Distribution transformer
- Dry type transformer
- oil type transformer
- Reactor and magnetic amplifier
- TV transfomer
- Voltage regulator
- Radio transformer
Applications

Main Application Scenarios of Grain Oriented electrical steel
Power transformer

Long-term full-load operation requires materials with low no-load loss, high magnetic induction, ultra-high surface flatness and excellent coating adhesion.
It is suitable to adopt HiB grain-oriented electrical steel of grade 085 and 090.
Distribution Transformer

higher cost performance, good machinability and moderate no-load loss, matched with standard surface flatness and reliable coating adhesion. Conventional grain-oriented electrical steel in grades 100, 110 and 110 is well applicable
Renewable Energy Transformer

It requires full-cycle material stability, featuring low iron loss, harmonic resistance, high-frequency adaptability and reliable stability.
grain-oriented electrical steel in grades 090, 095 and 100 is recommended

Grain-Oriented Electrical Steel Grade Application
| Core Loss Grade | Core Material Property | Key Material Characteristics | Application Scope |
|---|---|---|---|
| 085 | High-grade HiB grain-oriented electrical steel | Extremely low no-load core loss, ultra-high magnetic induction, ultra-high surface flatness and excellent coating adhesion. It features low magnetostriction, low operating noise and superior insulation stability. Capable of continuous full-load operation without performance attenuation, with high lamination factor and strong overload resistance. | Core material for 110kV and above large-scale power transmission transformers and grid hub main transformers. Also applicable to high-end solar and wind power boost transformers, ideal for key power equipment requiring strict loss control and long-term operational stability. |
| 090 | Mid-to-high grade HiB grain-oriented electrical steel | Stable ultra-low core loss and excellent high magnetic induction saturation performance. It has uniform flatness, strong coating adhesion, outstanding high-frequency adaptability and harmonic resistance. With full-cycle operational stability and reliable machinability, it balances low loss and structural stability. | Mainstream high-end material for conventional 110kV+ power transmission transformers. Preferred material for photovoltaic and wind power new energy transformers adapting to fluctuating load and harmonic working conditions. Also suitable for high-efficiency 35kV and below distribution transformers. |
| 095 | Mid-range general CRGO steel (HiB / CGO optional) | Moderate core loss and qualified magnetic induction performance. It delivers excellent high-frequency adaptability, harmonic resistance and full-cycle stability. With standard surface flatness and reliable coating performance, it has great punching machinability and achieves an optimal balance between energy efficiency, stability and cost. | Core material for solar and wind power new energy transformers, and first-class energy-saving 35kV and below small distribution transformers. Suitable for outdoor complex working conditions with load fluctuation and harmonic interference. |
| 100 | Mid-low grade economical CRGO steel (Mainly CGO) | Moderate no-load core loss that meets conventional operational requirements. It features stable surface flatness and coating adhesion, as well as superior stamping performance for mass production. With prominent cost advantages and stable daily operation, it is designed for standard working conditions without complex harmonic interference. | Widely used for standard-efficiency civil and industrial small distribution transformers below 35kV and general station distribution equipment. Ideal for cost-sensitive mass scenarios with stable load and no high-frequency harmonic interference. |
| 110 | Economical conventional GO steel (Standard CGO) | Fully meets national basic energy efficiency standards with qualified magnetic induction, flatness and coating performance. It provides excellent machinability and high cost performance, and only adapts to stable power frequency operation without frequent load fluctuation. | |
| 120 | Entry-level economical GO steel | Meets the minimum industry energy efficiency access standard with mature processing performance and the lowest cost. It only satisfies basic power frequency operation and cannot adapt to long-term full-load operation, high-frequency conditions or harmonic interference environments. | Applied to low-end general small distribution transformers and civil simple power supporting equipment. Not applicable for high-voltage transmission transformers and new energy transformers with complex working conditions. |
Core Selection Guidelines
- 110kV+ High Voltage Transmission Transformer: Adopt 085 / 090 HiB high-grade steel for ultra-low loss and high operational stability
- 35kV and Below Distribution Transformer: Mainly adopt 095 / 100 / 110/120 grades to balance energy efficiency and cost performance
- Solar & Wind Power New Energy Transformer: Recommended 090 / 095 / 100 grades, HiB is not mandatory, focusing on harmonic resistance, high-frequency adaptability and full-cycle stability
